Drawing Club

Since being an artist can be isolating, I have started the Drawing Club to meet and draw with others and share my fascination about drawing materials, the human figure, portraits, proportions and conjuring up images.

Saturdays 10.45am – 1:15pm

€20 per session / held at studio in Nicosia

ABOUT

These are observational drawing sessions, which anyone can join, to help develop a consistent drawing practice. Each week a theme is given with printed visual references, primarily from popular culture (Netflix shows, sports, celebrities etc).

AIM

Improving observational skills and figuring out spatial relationships and distances on paper are the main goals of the club. There is no expectation for realistic results but some resemblance to the references and evidence of attentive observation will be highly appreciated!

FORMAT

Drawing demands concentration and since it can be taxing to the brain, each drawing bout is kept short (usually 20 – 25 minutes) before a brief group review takes place. The whole session lasts 2.5 hours.

Most times every participant has the same visual reference. Seeing how differently each person renders the same subject is one of my favourite parts. The reviews are supportive, but since art is exceptionally subjective, feedback comes through the lens of each person’s taste. My advice would be to filter what to take from it.

STYLE

With a regular drawing practice, individual styles can often emerge organically. Usually, we tend to exaggerate certain elements in a drawing unintentionally and these ‘mistakes’ can be charming and contribute to a uniqueness.

This is why I personally don’t do much measuring unless I am stuck, or likeness in a portrait is of utmost importance. However, this principle is explained to complete beginners in case they wish to use it.

WHY

Observational drawing is beneficial for concentration, hand to eye coordination, coming up with ideas, learning to compose fictional scenes and drawing completely from imagination. With time, one can improve all the above in a supportive environment.

 MATERIALS

Drawing supplies are provided but If your goal is drawing regularly, it is best to obtain your own materials.
